I think I speak for everyone when I say we all love a takeaway. You get home from a long day and all you want to do is just relax and eat something tasty. We’ve all had those guilty moments where money feels like no object when faced with the greediness of ordering food. Cleary everyone else thinks so, as 2020 saw more than 111 million Americans and 11 million Brits ordering food online on a daily basis (That’s a lot of pizzas!). But do we ever stop and think about the things we don’t like about getting our favourite takeaway? How many times has it felt like things were just that bit more expensive than you would normally pay? Ever find your food arriving just not as hot or as fresh as you wanted it to be?
What if I told you there was a way that you could make delicious and authentic takeaway grub at a fraction of the cost and a lot less hassle than you might think! To make things even simpler, I have used Capsule dishwasher to cover all of my dishes and vegetable prep so these mouth-watering recipes can be enjoyed without even needing to worry about cleaning up afterwards.
This is our first in a series showing you some of our favourite “Fakeaway” recipes that you can make at home today! Enjoy perfect and fresh authentic recipes without the takeaway price. Brought to you by the Capsule Dishwasher, the sustainable kitchen assistant made just for you!
Indo-Chinese Sweet-and-Sour Chicken
Source- The Curry Guy Bible by Dan Toombs
Prep time- 20 mins Cook Time- 1 hour
Level of effort- Low Cook Temp- 175C (350F or Gas mark 4)
Sweet-and-sour chicken is a staple of any good Chinese restaurant. Sticky, spicy and simply delicious! This recipe is not only ridiculously simple, but the end result is almost identical to that of your favourite Chinese restaurant. Paired with egg noodles or rice, this makes a perfect meal for two for a Friday night and leaves plenty of leftovers for a second helping the next day. The Curry Guy Bible is perfect for authentic recipes in your own home and and it is truly difficult to tell the difference between these recipes and the dishes from your favourite takeaway!
Ingredients and basic steps
Step 1: For the chicken
1kg of Chicken Thighs (skinless and boneless) cut into thirds
Place chicken into a tray and cover with:
Garlic salt (I used a generous amount of salt and Garlic powder for this)
Amchoor/mango powder (half a teaspoon is more than enough)
Dishes used- 1 Tray, 1 Chopping Board
Step 2: Getting the crisp
Fill a small bowl with plain flour and coat your chicken pieces (no eggs required as the flour sticks naturally to the moisture of the chicken)
Heat a little oil into a large frying pan (2cm/20mm) and fry the chicken in batches for 2 minutes a side (This will ensure they get a nice satisfying crisp when cooking). It should take 2-3 batches to use all the chicken depending on the size of your frying pan)
Return the chicken to the tray
Dishes used- 1 small bowl, 1 frying pan
Step 3- The best part! (the sauce)
Creating the authentically sticky sauce is arguable the easiest part of this recipe. Simply add these ingredients to a small saucepan:
100g (1/2 cup) Caster sugar
125ml (1/2 cup) white wine vinegar
2 tbsp red chilli hot sauce
4 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp dark soy sauce
65ml (1/4 cup) orange juice
Salt and pepper to taste
Heat the saucepan on low until the sugar melts (check this with a spoon if you are unsure) and Done!
Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken, pop it in the oven and follow the cooking times.
Pop all of the prep dishes into the Capsule dishwasher and spend the next hour doing whatever you like! Set a timer, put your feet up and let Capsule handle all of the sticky prep dishes.
Dishes used- 1 saucepan, 1 spoon

And voila! You have perfect sticky and succulent sweet and sour chicken without even needing to get a t-shirt soggy or a sponge dirty.
